Hunger. Illustrated.

The images for this photo essay were made over the course of more than a year. It's a portrait of hunger and malnutrition in Haiti, insidious challenges that contribute to many of Haiti's greatest problems and yet are not often overtly noticeable in the day-to-day. The video was produced pre-earthquake.

Images of hardship and struggle are (ought to be) hard to view and even harder to photograph. Certainly, this kind of work takes its toll. But I have to feel working on this project prepared me in many ways for photographing in present-day Haiti. I hope these images present the characters in an honest, vulnerable and respectful manner, preserving the dignity God created in each of us while not sugar-coating the complexity of the issues.
